Vivian Mac Gillavry graduated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2021. She lives and works in Amsterdam.
In her sculptural based practice Vivian Mac Gillavry explores processes of transformation. Abstract forms that seem to reference the natural world evoke either curiosity or aversion. Through metal sculptures - either casted bronze or welded iron - she creates an alternative world in which the tension between organic and constructed, and between growth and decay plays a major role.
‘Growth, by definition, goes hand in hand with decay. Growth in the "natural" sense, but also in the sense of the human drive for expansion. My work can be interpreted in both ways: as something that blossoms, grows, or spreads, or on the other hand, breaks down, diminishes, or tears open.’ Her works can be seen as organisms that play with the duality of these constant processes of transformation, inviting to reimagine our place in the world in a way that acknowledges our connection with our environment.
